Ophthalmic Technician IV #Full Time

The 61st Street Service Corporation, provides administrative and clinical support staff for ColumbiaDoctors. This position will support ColumbiaDoctors, one of the largest multi-specialty practices in the Northeast. ColumbiaDoctors’ practices comprise an experienced group of more than 2,800 physicians, surgeons, dentists, and nurses, offering more than 240 specialties and subspecialties.

Job Summary:

The Ophthalmic Technician IV provides excellent patient care from basic eye health to surgical interventions. The Ophthalmic Technician IV plays a lead role on site and performs duties including scheduling ophthalmic technicians and initiatives to improve patient care and office flow.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Provides technical leadership to technicians and serves as lead or "point person" when the Tech Manager is not physically present. Under the direction of the Tech Manager, the Ophthalmic Technician IV conducts regular technical support staff meetings to ensure that the staff meets and exceeds service standards set forth by the practice.
  • Greet patients and visitors (ensure patients have completed screening process and appropriate equipment upon arrival). Call triage of patient matters such as post-operative concerns, prescription refill requests and medical questions.
  • Share techniques and knowledge with peers to help improve team productivity targets. Track trends, analyze data, and prepare analysis for management as needed.
  • Responsible for patient histories, visual acuity assessment and manual refractions, anterior segment examination, applanation tonometry, pupil evaluation, confrontation field, and Amsler grid testing.
  • Perform basic diagnostic testing such as visual fields, specular microscopy, IOL master/Immersion A-scans, Atlas/Pentacam topography, pneumatonometry, and OCT.
  • Accurate documentation and reconciliation of drug logs to ensure proper inventory control.
  • Sterilization and calibration of instruments.
  • Utilize systems and other technology as appropriate.
  • Maintain accurate and legible documentation in patient records.
  • Maintain an inventory of all diagnostic and therapeutic equipment in the department and ensure that equipment is maintained in good working order and routine services are completed. Address and resolve any equipment issues.
  • Assist Supervisor/Manager with special projects, using data and system reports to identify trends, troubleshoot, and supervise specific tasks as determined by the Manager/Supervisor.
  • Coordinate onboarding activities for new staff. Assign mentor/experiences peer for training/shadowing.
  • Serve as the first point of escalation for complex cases or scheduling issues.
  • May serve as a team point person and/or backup to Supervisor when tasked.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Job Qualifications:

  • High School or equivalent required.
  • A minimum of 7 years of ophthalmology experience or equivalent combination of education and experience including certification(s) in COA, JCAHPO, or COT.
  • Experience in ophthalmic care in one or more of the following imaging modalities: Visual field testing, Optical coherence tomography, Fundus photography, Specular biomicroscopy, Corneal topography, Ophthalmic work-up technical skills (patient history, visual acuity, applanation tonometry, pupillary testing, and dilation), Study certification for clinical trials, A-Scans, Scribing.
  • Must demonstrate proficiency conducting anterior imaging skill such as immersion scans, IOL master, topography, sepcular microscopy, and refraction
  • Must demonstrate proficiency conducting refinement refraction using the Jackson-Cross cylinder method
  • Must demonstrate proficiency conducting basic ophthalmic pre-examinations such as pupil evaluation, confrontational fields and motility, and applanation tonometry.
  • Must demonstrate proficiency conducting anterior segment slit lamp evaluation
  • CPR required
  • Must demonstrate strong organizational, adaptability, and problem-solving skills. Ability to perform across multi-disciplinary and/or specialties while maintaining high productivity and service delivery.
  • Ability to multitask and prioritize while maintaining a pleasant and calm demeanor with customers, patients, and caregivers
  • Must be able to handle oneself in a professional and service-oriented manner, heavy and diverse workload in a busy and pressured outpatient environment
  • Ability to work collaboratively with a culturally diverse staff and patient/family population demonstrating tact, respect, and sensitivity.
  • Must have excellent communication skills, organizational skills, high energy level, highly developed interpersonal skills, and ability to actively handle patients who may be in stressful situations
  • Strong proficiency in computer skills including, but not limited to, Electronic Health Systems, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word, Email systems, etc.
  • Preferred multi-specialty experience in a high volume setting preferred.
  • Prior EMR experience preferred.
  • Prior supervisory experience preferred.

Hourly Rate Ranges: $32.21 - $39.62

Note: Our salary offers will fall within these ranges based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to experience, skill set, training and education.
