The 61st Street Service Corporation, provides administrative and clinical support staff for ColumbiaDoctors. This position will support ColumbiaDoctors, one of the largest multi-specialty practices in the Northeast. ColumbiaDoctors’ practices comprise an experienced group of more than 2,800 physicians, surgeons, dentists, and nurses, offering more than 240 specialties and subspecialties.
Job Summary:
The Central Service Technician is a skilled professional responsible for decontamination, cleaning, assembly, packaging, sterilization and distribution of surgical instruments and the manual cleaning, high level disinfection and distribution of endoscopes in an ambulatory setting. Instrument and endoscope reprocessing are performed according to the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI), Healthcare Sterile Processing Association (HSPA), American National Standards Institute (ANSI), and the Association of Perioperative Registered Nurses (AORN) current standards. The CSS Technician is a vital contributor to the delivery of safe, high-quality patient care.
Job Responsibilities:
- Greet and interact with patients, visitors, vendors, and all faculty and staff.
- Demonstrates understanding of surgical procedures and serve as a resource to physicians, nurses, surgical technologists and other medical personnel.
- Perform and document regular quality assurance testing, including but not limited to sterilization test cycles, chemical/temperature monitoring, and biological indicator checks.
- Broad based and extensive technical knowledge, including but not limited to surgical instrumentation, sterilization processes, sterilization equipment and high level disinfection
- Assemble instrument trays, procedure packs and case carts for outpatient procedures and distribute to designated areas.
- Maintain and operate high level disinfection and sterilization equipment to insure that all cleaning, disinfecting and sterilization processes are monitored and recorded as per instructions for use (IFUs), industry guidelines and recommendations.
- Participate in internal and external regulatory activities such as mock tracers, survey visits, corrective action planning, etc.
- Decontaminate and disinfect surgical instruments and endoscopes using manual and mechanical processes in accordance with policy, manufacturer guidelines, and infection control standards.
- Replace missing or damaged instruments to ensure complete and functional, including but not limited to surgical instrument tray and procedural instruments/equipment.
- Monitor product expiration dates, rotate stock, and remove outdated or compromised items.
- Uses knowledge of environmental hazards, including but not limited to detergents, sterilants, disinfectants, mechanical, electrical and sterilization equipment, to protect patients and prevent accidents.
- Measure enzymatic detergents and chemicals to ensure dilution rates are accurate and consistent through both high level disinfection and sterilization processes.
- Ensures that the instrument trays are assembled according to instrument count sheets using the appropriate system.
- Interprets all gauges, control panels and printouts and initials after sterilization is complete, including but not limited to high pressure steam sterilizer, Midmark/Zirbus/Tuttnauer autoclave or ethylene oxide gas sterilizer.
- Load autoclaves and set sterilization parameters according to item type and manufacturer instructions.
- Adorns appropriate P.P.E. when performing decontamination of instruments and equipment.
- Perform and document daily test cycles, including but not limited to sterilizer's, automatic endoscope reprocessors, ultrasonic washer and instrument and cart washers and perform required cleaning of sterilization equipment.
- Demonstrates knowledge and skill in all organizational computer systems, including but not limited to OR Manager, One Source IFU, Outlook, Sentact.
- Keeps current on concepts, techniques, and methods relative to area of responsibility. Participates in educational activities to maintain knowledge base and learn new procedures/technology.
- Other duties as assigned.
Job Requirements:
- High school graduate or equivalency required.
- Certified Registered Central Sterile Technician (CRCST) or Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution (CBSPD) required.
- At least two years of previous central sterile and reprocessing experience within a hospital setting required.
- Knowledge of aseptic technique, sterilization technique, infection control requirements, and a basic knowledge of med/surg procedure terminology
- Must demonstrate strong organizational and problem solving skills. Ability to perform across multi-disciplinary and/or specialties while maintaining high productivity and a professional and service-oriented demeanor.
- Ability to work collaboratively with a culturally diverse staff and patient/family population demonstrating tact, respect, and sensitivity.
- Must have excellent communication skills, interpersonal skills, and strong ability to deescalate stressful situations.
- Must be an engaged team member demonstrating collaboration, inclusion, reliability, punctuality, and adaptability to new and changing situations.
- Basic proficiency in computer skills including, but not limited to, Electronic Health Systems, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word, Email systems, etc.
- Regular exposure to blood and body fluids, communicable disease and other conditions common to a clinical work environment.
- Will provide coverage as requested throughout FPO practices (multiple sites and flexible schedule). Must be able to work evenings and weekends as required.
- Associates Degree or additional academic coursework is preferred.
- Proficiency of OSHA standards including disposal of biohazard waste is preferred.
- Preferred multi-specialty experience in a high volume setting preferred.
- Prior EMR experience, EPIC preferred.
Hourly Rate Ranges: $23.67 - $32.45
Note: Our salary offers will fall within these ranges based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to experience, skill set, training and education.
