The 61st Street Service Corporation, provides administrative and clinical support staff for ColumbiaDoctors. This position will support ColumbiaDoctors, one of the largest multi-specialty practices in the Northeast. ColumbiaDoctors’ practices comprise an experienced group of more than 2,800 physicians, surgeons, dentists, and nurses, offering more than 240 specialties and subspecialties.
Job Summary:
Under the direction of the Manager, the Phebotomist perform all job functions to ensure the professional, accurate and efficient processing of specimens and patients. Must be able to work flexible hours and have excellent customer service skills. The Phlebotomist has direct contact with patients and creates an atmosphere of trust and confidence while explaining procedures to patients and drawing blood specimens in a skillful, safe and accurate manner following all established practices and procedures for specimen collection and processing.
Job Responsibilities:
- Perform veni-puncture, finger sticks and heel punctures on adults and pediatric patients.
- Process blood specimens by accessioning, spinning and packaging for transport.
- Coordinate specimen pick-ups and tracking of specimens when necessary.
- Use appropriate sterile and precautionary procedures when drawing patient specimens; properly identify patient before culture, tube, or whatever technique is required for proper collection of the specimen.
- Follow all ColumbiaDoctors’ policies and procedures including but not limited to Patient Verification, Specimen Collections, Specimen Labeling and Refrigerator and Freezer Temperature Monitoring.
- Follows established specimen handling guidelines and precautions as described in processing laboratories Test Menu/Directory without deviation from these established guidelines.
- Verifies patient identity and performs positive patient identification accurately and without error to ensure the safety of patients and the accuracy of the lab test results.
- Responsible for labeling all specimens legibly and accurately without error at time of draw, with all pertinent information as required by hospital and departmental standards.
- Accurately explains urine and stool sample collection to patients and emphasizes the importance that proper collection plays in the accuracy of lab test results.
- Follows universal precaution standards for each venipuncture or nasal swab collection.
- Properly disinfects and maintains the draw room area for specimen collections to ensure a clean and safe environment.
- Recognizes the signs and symptoms associated with an adverse reaction to a venipuncture and follows the proper protocols to maintain patient safety. Documents the adverse reaction in SafetyZone.
- Responsible for assuring specimen integrity from the point of obtaining the specimen at the Central Draw Station through courier pick up
- Courier pick-up times are recognized and the specimen are prepared and placed in correct specimen pick up box in advance of the courier’s arrival?.
- If couriers fail to arrive at the predetermined time, phlebotomists follow-up with courier to guarantee specimen are picked up immediately.
- Responsible for the inventory and supplies necessary for specimen collection and overall operation of the Central Draw Station.
- Train new staff in job responsibilities.
- May assist Supervisor/Manager with special projects as needed.
- Communicates insurance participation, financial responsibility (if applicable).
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Job Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalency is required.
- License/Certificate: Phlebotomy Technician or Credentialed Medical Assistant.
- Experience in phlebotomy desirable
- Candidate must demonstrate strong customer service orientation and the ability to deliver consistent exceptional service while demonstrating tact, respect and sensitivity.
- Excellent relationship management skills including, but not limited to, emotional intelligence, interpersonal skills, empathy, and ability to handle situations with respect, tact and sensitivity.
- Ability to work collaboratively with a culturally diverse staff and patient/family population demonstrating tact and sensitivity in stressful situations.
- Prior experience in EPIC is preferred.
- Prior experience in medical office setting or a customer service environment is preferred.
- Bilingual English/Spanish a plus, but not required.
Hourly Rate Ranges: $19.23 - $28.85
Note: Our salary offers will fall within these ranges based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to experience, skill set, training and education.
