Lead Certified Medical Assistant #Full Time

Department: Med - Cardio Electrophysiology
Location: New York, NY

Job Summary:

The Lead Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) will serve as a key member of the patient care team in an ambulatory setting. The Lead Certified Medical Assistant is responsible for overseeing the daily clinic flow and operations of a high-volume Electrophysiology practice within the Cardiology Division at Columbia University Irving Medical Center.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate CMA coverage for daily patient flow at all locations within the medical center; ensure patients are processed in a timely manner.
  • Manage all clinical inventory; place supply orders as needed. Responsible to oversee stock and inventory in all Cardiology exam rooms on HRT 4 and HIP 6 locations.
  • Set up examination /consultation rooms; assure rooms are stocked and cleaned between patient visits.
  • Prepare patients for their visit including pre-visit organization of information, taking vital signs, and medication reconciliation. Assist patients with walking, transferring, dressing, collecting and processing specimens and point of care testing, preparing for exam, etc.
  • Perform EKGs, Holter monitors, blood pressure and INR checks. Conduct phlebotomy for designated patients.
  • Perform venipuncture as requested and prepare/label specimens.
  • Collect and label nasopharyngeal specimens for testing.
  • Utilize the EPIC system to input discreet clinical data elements: medications, allergies, vitals, labs and patient problems. Verify patient information in EPIC and Paceart; coordinate required patient documents to be scanned for EPIC filing and designate to the appropriate personnel.
  • Assist patients including but not exclusive to helping handicapped patients to the bathroom, assisting ambulance staff with patient transportation, assisting patients in preparation for procedures, etc.
  • Responsible for EPIC order entry (required). Responsible for room assignment in EPIC.
  • Responsible for the clinical flow of the practice; assist Physicians and Nurse Practitioners as needed; assist with procedures performed in the office setting.
  • Perform general office duties such as monitoring the providers’ daily schedules, answering incoming calls, photocopying, faxing and scanning. Assist with Front Desk coverage as needed.
  • Obtain prior authorizations for medications.
  • Maintain diagnostic equipment, perform QC testing and supporting documentation.
  • Perform point of care testing as trained
  • Contribute ideas for improving practice workflows to team members, providers, and management.
  • Assist Supervisor and/or Manager with daily staffing schedules, time off requests, same day absences, etc. Ensure adequate coverage and addresses and related issues as directed.
  • Serve as a Preceptor for new and existing staff. Mentor CMAs by sharing knowledge, expertise, and demonstrating Primary Care values.
  • Identify areas for improvement in clinic operations, recommends alternative procedures, actions or sources of information to resolve issues.
  • Work collaboratively with front and back end support team and providers to ensure patient satisfaction and protocol standards are met.
  • Support communication of organizational initiatives, changes or other issues as needed. Provide feedback to management on adoption and understanding. Serve as advocate for team when needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements:

  • High school graduate or equivalency and graduated from an accredited Medical Assistant program.
  • 3 years’ relevant experience including 1 year minimum in a medical assistant role.
  • CMA or equivalency required.
  • Prior EMR experience, Epic preferred.
  • Spanish speaking preferred.

Hourly Rate Ranges: $25.25 - $37.02

Note: Our salary offers will fall within these ranges based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to experience, skill set, training and education.
