Certified Medical Assistant #Full Time

Department: Med - Pulmonary Critical Care
Location: New York, NY

Job Summary:

The Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) will be responsible for assisting with multiple physicians within the Division of Pulmonary, Allergy and Critical Care Medicine.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Greeting and interacting with patients in a courteous, professional, and welcoming manner.
  • Ability to adjust daily to different services and medical office staff needs, process and clinical flow.
  • Ability to work independently and take initiative to improve overall office operations.
  • Ability to work flexible hours/days.
  • Collection and recording up to date Pharmacy information and Meaningful Use data in EPIC.
  • Encourage EPIC Patient Portal usage.
  • Obtaining insurance pre-authorizations for treatments, diagnostic procedures and medication as needed.
  • Obtaining outside radiological images/CD that require uploading into PACS.
  • Maintain a neat and orderly work area and notify administration if supplies are needed.
  • Accurately scanning information into EPIC (including but not limited to insurance card, referrals, registration forms, outside medical records, etc.)
  • Exercising skill in prioritizing assignments to complete work in a timely manner when there are changes in workload, assignments, and pressures of deadlines, competitive requirements and/or a heavy workload.
  • Interacting and communicating with team members and providers to ensure a smooth and timely flow of patients.
  • Signaling to provider that patient is roomed and ready in EPIC.
  • Maintain a cooperative and professional relationship with providers, patients, other departmental staff, and coworkers.
  • Provide cross coverage as needed with other CMAs in our group.
  • Confirm new patients for the following week when needed.
  • Facilitating physician and patient administrative needs.
  • Works as part of the clinical team as needed.
  • Responsible for managing a smooth clinic flow by assessing and anticipating MD schedule, ensuring any patient results or chart documents are available and assigning clinic space effectively.
  • Ensures that the examination /consultation/treatment rooms are stocked with all needed medical supplies, set up kits, and ultrasound machine.
  • Assist provider with all medical procedures.
  • Prepare exam/procedure room and patient by obtaining materials needed for the procedure including patient consent form.
  • Assist patient with transport to ED when necessary and act as medical chaperone for sensitive medical exams.
  • Perform Six Minute walk and/or check oxygen saturations with exertion.
  • Call patients back with simple medical answers and notify patients of normal test results.
  • Assist provider with EPIC In Basket Issues.
  • Responsible for making sure the exam rooms and waiting area are cleaned and maintained.
  • Interviews patient, measures vital signs, height and weight, and records information in EPIC.
  • Medication reconciliation and refill requests to be entered into EPIC for verification by MDs.
  • Completes medication reconciliation and/or test requisitions and places order in EPIC at direction of provider.
  • EPIC Order Entries Required.
  • Perform phlebotomy, and urinalysis.
  • Collects, labels, and sends all specimens to proper areas of the hospital.
  • Maintains up-to-date and knowledgeable with Columbia University procedures and protocols.
  • Is knowledgeable and familiar with fire/safety procedures and security protocol.
  • Completes other duties and special projects as assigned.
  • Conforms to all applicable HIPAA, billing compliance and safety guidelines.

Job Requirements:

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent required.
  • Graduated from an accredited Medical Assistant training program required.
  • CMA/RMA certification required.
  • BLS certification required.
  • Phlebotomy
  • Ability to work with patients and make them feel comfortable.
  • One year of experience in an outpatient medical office environment preferred.
  • Ability to work in a team environment required
  • Knowledge of medical office equipment, systems and procedures.
  • Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Knowledge of EPIC preferred.
  • Bilingual Spanish preferred.

Hourly Rate Ranges: $21.00 - $33.17

Note: Our salary offers will fall within these ranges based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to experience, skill set, training and education.
