Diagnostic Imaging Specialist I #Full Time

Department: Ophthalmology - CUIMC
Location: New York, NY

Job Summary:

The Diagnostic Imaging Specialist I will serve as a key member of the Department of Ophthalmology patient care team. In this role, the incumbent will perform all duties associated with acquisition, processing, submission for interpretation, and archiving of ophthalmic images and will be responsible for the care of the patient while in the imaging area.

Successful candidates will have experience in an ophthalmology setting and be able to demonstrate a strong service orientation and an ability to learn new technical skills. In this role, the Specialist I can expect to learn to independently perform fundus photography, optical coherence tomography, corneal mapping, specular biomicroscopy, and flatbed scanning, as well as to build their patient care experience in an ambulatory setting.

The Specialist I will work closely with providers as well as with other clinical and administrative staff to deliver an exceptional patient experience that contributes to positive health outcomes for patients and a work culture of Service-Oriented, Trust, Empathy, Safety, Inclusion, and Communication.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Perform diagnostic imaging studies and examinations according to practice standards:
    • Review imaging requests for appropriateness based on clinical information provided. Review and respond to all imaging requests. When needed assess appropriateness based on clinical information provided. Bring questions on orders to supervisor and, at their discretion, the referring physician.
    • Position patient and select appropriate options to ensure best-case imaging based on accepted ophthalmic standard of practice and institutional imaging protocols.
    • Operate cameras, scanners, and other imaging equipment to perform fundus photography, optical coherence tomography, corneal mapping, specular biomicroscopy, and flatbed scanning.
    • Observe patient while in the imaging area for change in status and make appropriate intervention or contact supervisor for instruction.
    • Systematically and accurately, enter patient data into imaging systems and transfer images to the PACS.
    • Judge diagnostic quality of finished medical images prior to submission to ophthalmologist for interpretation.
  • Operate and maintain equipment on a daily basis, maintaining logbooks with equipment performance data: schedule PM, perform QA, maintain records required for and participate in inspections.
  • Processing, sterilizing, and organizing instruments daily.
  • Ensuring inventory and adequate supply of personal protective equipment and other hygiene products in the patient treatment area.
  • Performing clerical responsibilities associated with the acquisition, processing, and archiving of patient records: ensure that patients have completed the screening process; schedule and arrive procedures in Epic and other systems as needed; perform any additional data entry as needed.
  • Offering detailed explanations of pre- and post-visit processes and diagnostic procedures to patients and answering questions as appropriate, including via pre-procedure and post-procedure calls.
  • Assist supervisor/manager with special projects.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Job Qualifications:

  • High school graduate and a minimum of 6 months’ ophthalmology experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience; Associate degree preferred.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Strong service orientation.
  • Strong organizational and problem-solving skills, including the ability to prioritize, multitask, and work independently with consistent follow-through.
  • Basic proficiency in computer skills including, but not limited to, Electronic Health Systems, Microsoft Office, email, etc. Ability and willingness to learn new systems and programs.
  • Will provide coverage as requested throughout practices (multiple sites and flexible schedule).
  • Relevant ophthalmic certification preferred.
  • Certification and imaging experience for clinical research studies preferred.
  • CPR certified preferred.
  • Multi-specialty experience in a high-volume setting preferred.
  • Prior EMR experience, Epic preferred.

Hourly Rate Ranges: $26.44 - $32.19

Note: Our salary offers will fall within these ranges based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to experience, skill set, training and education.
